Eating foods rich in antioxidants help destroy free radicals!!  Research shows that vitamin C, E, A (beta carotene), and selenium nourish and protect skin, which can help keep it looking better for longer!

  • Vitamin C: involved in collagen production — bell peppers, citrus, strawberries, white potatoes, kiwi, sugar snap peas
  • Vitamin E: protects cell membranes and protect against sun damage get it from food not supplements — nuts and seeds, nut butters, avocado, wheat germ, ground flaxseed/flaxseed oil, greens (collard, Swiss chard, spinach), broccoli, red bell peppers
  • Vitamin A (beta carotene): growth and repair of body tissues; might protect against sun damage — carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, pumpkin, apricots, mango (orange foods!), cabbage, greens, watercress, watermelon, red bell pepper.
  • Selenium: protects skin elasticity; protects against sun damage (get it from food not supplements.  (If have been diagnosed with skin cancer please consult with your doctor before taking supplements.) — tuna, crab, oysters, shrimp, cod, tilapia, lean beef, turkey, brown rice, whole wheat products (bread, pasta, crackers, etc.), eggs, mushrooms, fat free cottage cheese
  • Zinc: protects cell membranes, maintains collagen (to keep skin firm), important for skin renewal — oysters, turkey, lean beef, nuts and seeds, reduced fat cheese, nonfat milk, low fat yogurt, beans, lentils, peas
  • Omega-3s: keep cell membranes healthy so your cells hold in more water and nutrients and keep toxins out. It may also protect against sun damage — salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, Pacific oysters, fortified eggs, walnuts, ground flaxseeds (and oil), seaweed, soybeans

Ingredient Thought of the Day/ingredient-thought-of-the-day /ingredient-thought-of-the-day#comments Tue, 21 Aug 2012 16:48:05 +0000 Dr. Gram /?p=482 Just like your body benefits from a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables and exercise, your skin also needs to have a good workout and nutrition to stay healthy as well.  The important ingredient in the fruits, vegetables that your body and skin needs is Antioxidants.  Constantly bathing your skin in antioxidants will help counter the effects of free radicals and inflammation from stress, pollution, and the effects from the sun that can lead to wrinkles, age spots or disease.

How to reduce Brown Spots and Control Sun Damage!/how-to-reduce-brown-spots-and-control-sun-damage /how-to-reduce-brown-spots-and-control-sun-damage#comments Tue, 31 Jul 2012 16:19:14 +0000 Dr. Gram /?p=476 The sun feels great on the early summer morning when you wake up and sit outside with your coffee for a nice relaxing moment before the work day starts and all the stress begin, But at what cost?

For that little time in the sun, the exposure to ultraviolet rays triggers increases in melanin.  This is the pigment that gives color to skin.  Excess melanin causing hyperpigmentation which is better known as age spots, brown spots, sun spots, or liver spots.  Unfortunately there are many other contributing factors to damaged skin and the discoloration including declining hormones, normal aging, and improper skin care. Although most brown spots are harmless, you should be evaluated by a dermatologist if a spot is very dark, gets bigger quickly, has irregular borders, or is unusually colored.

This is not all doom and gloom the good news is with some extra care and the use of some simple ingredients you can dramatically reduce the appearance of brown spots.

  1. Exfoliate your skin with a high quality facial scrub to remove pimple causing sebaceous gland oils.  Melanin often deposits in locations where black and white heads used to be, a condition known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
  2. See your local aesthetician and get a series of peels suitable for your skin type and condition.  Normally you can buy a series of 6 and save tons of money!
  3. I am not a big fan of hydroquinone for bleaching because the better ingredient is Kojic Acid a powerful bleaching agent in its own right.  Other brown spot eliminators are Salicylic Acid and Glycolic Acid which stimulate the skin to produce new cells more efficiently.  As always I love my antioxidants like green tea and aloe vera.
  4. The biggest and best is my Nutra-Vit Complex which contains Niacinamide, Glucosamine, Vitamin E and Apple Stem Cells.  The combination of these ingredients dramatically reduces fine line and wrinkles, controls hyperpigmentation, and oil production.
  5. Lastly WEAR SUNSCREEN daily to help prevent further sun damage.  Sun screens with Vitamin D and E will help control free radicals that contribute to brown spots.

Your eyes are your window to your soul…Dr Gram’s way of keeping them clean./your-eyes-are-your-window-to-your-soul%e2%80%a6dr-gram%e2%80%99s-way-of-keeping-them-clean. /your-eyes-are-your-window-to-your-soul%e2%80%a6dr-gram%e2%80%99s-way-of-keeping-them-clean.#comments Sat, 23 Jun 2012 18:53:29 +0000 Dr. Gram /?p=468 As we age it seems like it hits the eyes the hardest.  The most common evidence of this is the development of dark circles underneath the eyes, puffy under-eye skin, and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles also known as crow’s feet.

Ways that you can control to counteract the aging of the eyes is to get more sleep, relieve stress, and cease unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and or excessively drinking alcohol and if you are a sun god or goddess try to cut that down and use sunscreen.   Now unfortunately there is Mother Nature our genetic makeup that can also help us with the aging of our eyes.   For example, if you have a family history of these conditions, and or are having congestion problems, you can also develop dark circles, puffy eyes, and fine lines and wrinkles.

While some plastic surgeons and dermatologists suggest injection therapy to combat these problems, a vast majority of consumers prefer to use topical, over-the-counter solutions.

Cosmetics have advanced significantly in the last decade and Under-Eyes serums are no exception.  Dr. Gram’s ongoing research in the area of ingredients that help keep the eyes looking younger has given birth to GRAM Skincare Eye Rescue.  Thorough clinical testing has resulted in this formula that is extremely powerful and safe.

Dr. Gram has produced an effective product to reduce fine lines and wrinkle, decrease the puffiness and dark circles that haunt you and help with discoloration of the skin.  The best part is that he has made it cost effective for everyone!  Go to GRAM Skincare’s website and purchase today and enter the code FB25 to receive 25% off your order!

Where do pimples come from?/where-do-pimples-come-from /where-do-pimples-come-from#comments Thu, 17 May 2012 00:56:11 +0000 Dr. Gram /?p=464 A pimple starts when the pores in the skin become clogged with sebum.  Sebum is the natural oil that the body produces and it normally lubricates the skin and hair.  Acne break outs are more common during high times of stress, heavy sweating from workouts and puberty when your hormones go into overdrive, causing the skin to overproduce sebum.   Because many oil-producing glands are on the forehead, nose, and chin, this area is commonly called the T-zone and this is where most people are prone to pimples.  Using GRAM Skincare clarifying regimen can help control your acne during these tough times.

Acne Tips/acne-tips /acne-tips#comments Tue, 01 May 2012 17:16:36 +0000 Dr. Gram /?p=458 Acne Tips!

Here are a couple of tips to help you control your acne.

1. Moisturize

  • Being outside exposed to the elements can dry your skin.
  • Moisturizing will not cause more acne.  When your skin is dry your body wants to produce more oil which leads to acne.

2. Avoid irritating the skin.

  • Do not over wash or use harsh scrubs.

3. Don’t pick at your acne.

  • This can cause scarring or make acne worst.

4. Make-up.

  • Use water-based make-up.  Try to avoid oil based and alcohol based make-ups.
  • Don’t share make-up with your friends because this can spread bacteria.
  • Wash your face at bedtime.  Your facial skin needs to breath.

5. See your local esthetician for an acne peel and/or acne facial.

Dr Gram’s Wellness Recommendations for Taking Care of Your Eczema/dr-gram%e2%80%99s-wellness-recommendations-for-taking-care-of-your-eczema /dr-gram%e2%80%99s-wellness-recommendations-for-taking-care-of-your-eczema#comments Wed, 04 Apr 2012 17:51:08 +0000 Dr. Gram /?p=456 Dr Gram’s Wellness Recommendations for Taking Care of Your Eczema

      • Prevention – The key to controlling eczema is prevention. Avoid or reduce your exposure to soaps and cleansers that have sulfates.  If the cleanser you use has a lot of bubbles it has sulfates and that can irritate your skin.  Try to avoid household cleaners, detergents, and wool clothing.
      • CLEANSE, TONE, and MOISTURIZE –My motto to young healthy skin for men, women, and children.
      • Don’t Scratch – Do not scratch even if it itches! Get some over the counter Hydrocortisone with aloe to help the itch.  Scratching can further irritate the skin and can even cause the skin to break and crack, opening the door to infection.
      • Identify Your Triggers – Take the time to identify your triggers. This can help you to avoid or limit your exposure to the offending item even better. If you think a food item is causing your problems, talk to your doctor about getting an allergy test or try an elimination diet to help you identify the offending product.
      • Keep Hands Dry – Be sure to dry your hands completely after you wash them and don’t forget to remove your rings and dry them too.
      • Wear Protective Gloves – Wear gloves when your hands will be exposed to anything that can irritate them.
      • Stress Management – Harder to do than just saying reduce your stress but if you regularly exercise, try breathing techniques, biofeedback, meditation and yoga these things can help reduce your stress.  I practice these methods and my stress levels are much more controllable now.

Eczema is inflammation in your skin so if you use GRAM Skincare it will also help reduce the inflammation and help control your eczema.  If you have have severe eczema do not use the daily scrub, stick to the cleansers.

Medications and your Skin!/medications-and-your-skin /medications-and-your-skin#comments Thu, 29 Mar 2012 22:40:53 +0000 Dr. Gram /?p=454 Vitamins and Medications that can Change the way your Skin Looks.

There are many OTC, Prescription and Vitamins that can dry your skin, discolor, and make your skin more sensitive to the sun.  Here are a few medications and tips to help you keep your skin young and healthy.

Thyroid medication and high doses of Vitamin A can dry your skin which can lead to increase to oil production, fine lines and wrinkles.

Aspirin, penicillin, and Sulfa drug like Macrobid and Bactrim can cause rashes and hives.

Cortisone, birth controls, and anti-epilepsy medications can increase your oil production which leads to that dreaded acne that everyone loves…NOT.

If you are taking sulfa drugs, high blood pressure, birth control, or tetracycline make sure you wear SPF!  Your skin becomes more sensitive to the sun and you increase your risk of burning.

Even though these are possible side effects of some of these medications never discontinue your medications without first consulting your pharmacist or physician.

Inflammation in the skin can lead to increase in oil production, drying, and discoloration of the skin.  GRAM Skincare decreases inflammation which helps control all the issues listed above from the medications and general stress of daily living.
